Most well known as the host of race 7 on Melbourne Cup Day, Flemington Racecourse is famous as being one of the world’s best and most prestigious race tracks.

Located in close proximity to Melbourne’s CBD, Flemington is arguably the most famous racecourse in Australia and every year sees racegoers flock to the track for the many action-packed days of racing.

The Track

The Flemington track is always kept in pristine condition, making it ideal for top quality horse racing. Shaped similar to a pear, the Flemington track has a circumference of 2,312 metres and has a unique feature of a 1200 metre, or six furlong, straight. As with all racecourses in Victoria, races at Flemington are run in an anti-clockwise direction.

For races that take place at distances of more than 1200 metres, there is still a long final straight of 450 metres, making for exciting sprint finishes once the field passes the home turn.

Sprint events run at 1200 metres or less take place down the straight, which is commonly referred to in racing circles as “the straight six.” Given it is the only track of its kind in Australia, it is often difficult for horses to adapt to running in a straight line for an entire race and as such trainers generally take their runners for a number of pre-race runs on the course proper to get used to the different way of running.

The generous facilities at Flemington racecourse can cater for capacity crowds of 120,000 and have three grandstands which offer excellent spectating conditions for all the top-class races.

During the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November, it is not uncommon the see crowds of more than 100,000 people flock to Flemington to soak up the elite-level racing action.

Without doubt the most famous race to take place at Flemington racing is race 7 on Melbourne Cup Day, the $6.2 million Melbourne Cup. The four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival hosts some of the most prestigious events of the year, including the Group 1 Emirates Stakes, Group 1 Victoria Derby, Group 1 VRC Oaks and Group 1 Myer Classic.

Flemington also hosts elite racing at other times of the year, with the nation’s biggest sprint event, the Newmarket Handicap run down the famous “straight six” each March. Other major autumn events include the Group 1 Australian Cup and the Group 1 Australian Guineas.
