2015 Melbourne Cup Still Likely for Snow Sky

July 28th, 2015

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute was widely believed to have shelved plans for Snow Sky to travel to Australia for a 2015 Melbourne Cup campaign, however Chief International Scout for Racing Victoria Leigh Jordan remains confident the talented stayer will appear down under this year.

Snow Sky stamped his claims as one of the world’s leading distances horses when winning each of the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup (2816m) and Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2414m) in succession upon resuming this year, but failed to make anything of an impact when beating only one runner home in the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2414m) over the weekend.

Having exchanged correspondence with Teddy Grimthorpe; racing manager for Snow Sky’s owner Khalid Abdullah, Jordan told Racing Ahead that plans to contest the 2015 Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup double appear back on track.

“There was a lot of interest in another horse, Snow Sky, who won the Yorkshire Cup and then made a statement he’d come here for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup,” Jordan said.

“He then went on and won the Hardwicke in very, very impressive fashion and plans looked as though they might be off the table.

“After Saturday when he ran sixth, just through communication with Teddy Grimthorpe the racing manager he definitely has both Cups back on the radar which is good news.

“Sir Michael hasn’t been here since 2006 when Distinction ran in the Cup and obviously Juddmonte have never had a runner in either of the Caulfield or Melbourne Cup, so it would be a great achievement to get them back.

“I’d say they’ll see how the horse has pulled up and I would suspect the horse would have another run before they decide whether or not the horse will come down.”

Snow Sky stamped his claims as one to watch through a standout 2014 campaign, highlighted by successes in the Listed Derby Trial Stakes (2310m) and Group 3 Gordon Stakes (2414m); ending the year a credible third in the Group 1 Ladbrokes St Leger (2937m).

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Melbourne Cup odds, for which Snow Sky can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $21 for success.
