Mackinnon Stakes Not Just a Melbourne Cup Warm-up for Brambles

October 31st, 2014

Confirmed to line up for next Tuesday’s Race That Stops a Nation at Flemington, trainer Peter Moody has confirmed Brambles will not use Saturday’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) as a tune-up more than a major target for success.

Returning to racing in great form this time in, Brambles more than stamped his claims as a serious Melbourne Cup contender when finishing third in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 4th and a credible fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) last time out on October 18th.

Conceding the Mackinnon is also likely to help the Savabeel gelding’s cause in the Melbourne Cup, Moody told the Herald Sun Saturday’s run is a legitimate chance of a second victory at the highest level of Australian racing for the six-year-old and is confident of a typically polished performance.

“It’s a million dollar Group 1 so he is there to win if he can,” Moody said.

“I think it will greatly aid his cause come Tuesday because he is quite a bold going horse and the reason I want to run him is to take the edge off him a little for the two miles.

“But his 2000m form is super. Go back two runs and he got beaten a lip in the Turnbull by one of the favourites for the Melbourne Cup (Lucia Valentina).

“He is very fit from recent racing and the most important factor is that if you’ve got a fit horse they tend to butter up better than a horse that might be a little but soft in condition.”

Securing a commendable total of six wins and as many minor places from his 18 competitive appearances on course so far, Brambles undoubtedly registered career-best form over the 2012 autumn and winter; taking out each of the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) and Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) before charging home to secure the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) in June.

Spending nearly two years in the paddock with a severe tendon injury, Brambles finished a fighting fourth upon returning to racing in the Listed Thoroughbred Club Cup (14400m) on May 3rd, continuing to build in form and class on his way to second in the Listed Thoroughbred Bloodstock Stakes (1700m) and victory amongst classy competition in the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) prior to the Turnbull.

Offered at generous $13 odds for success in the Mackinnon Stakes this weekend, Brambles can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $26 for success in the 2014 Melbourne Cup with leading online bookie
