The Offer Out 2014 Melbourne Cup

October 28th, 2014

Maintaining early favouritism for the 2014 edition of the Race That Stops a nation for several months following his standout victory in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2 of The Championships in April, trainer Gai Waterhouse has confirmed The Offer will not line up for next week’s featured Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

A standout performer for Waterhouse of the Autumn Racing Carnival, The Offer finished a credible fifth in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) first-up this season, but has since faded in form in finishing ninth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and sixth in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

Having been unable to match the late pace of Admire Rakti when finishing a disappointing eleventh in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) last time out, The Offer drifted notably in betting markets for success in the Melbourne Cup; settling at particularly generous odds of $26 for success before his removal on Tuesday morning.

Forced to undergo a veterinary check in the days leading up to the Caulfield Cup, The Offer was also allocated the wide and somewhat awkward barrier 16 and appeared to stand no chance of success at any point in transit.

Reportedly not happy with the condition of the Montjeu entire coming out of the Caulfield Cup and over the last week, Waterhouse informed Racing Victoria The Offer would not be accepting into the final field of the 2014 Melbourne Cup on Wednesday morning.

Having secured a maiden victory in the Race The Stops a Nation via impressive stallion Fiorente in 2013, Waterhouse is now left without a runner in the 2014 Melbourne Cup and will therefore not successfully defend her title.

The confirmation The Offer will not run next Tuesday has also all but guaranteed a start for classy stayer Araldo, previously positioned 25 in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup.

Previously offered at odds of more than $30 for success, Araldo has firmed significantly in Melbourne Cup betting markets this morning and is now available at a quote of $19 for success with leading online bookie

Admire Rakti has maintained status as outright favourite for success in the 2014 Melbourne Cup at current $4.80 odds ahead of Protectionist ($7), Lucia Valentina ($7.50) and Fawkner ($8.50).
