Securing a commendable race record of seven wins and as many minor places from his 15 competitive starts so far, Mutual Regard stamped his claims as a serious Melbourne Cup threat when charging home to win the renowned (Ebor) Heritage Handicap (2816m) at Britain’s York Racecourse in late August.

Understandably thrilled to have picked up the ride on the Hernando gelding for the Race That Stops a Nation, Oliver told Racing Victoria he is confident his recent form line and the running conditions of the Melbourne Cup will play directly into Mutual Regard’s strengths on the first Tuesday of November.

“I was starting to get concerned when I didn’t have one and when Johnny (Murtagh) rang me on Sunday I was really pleased to take the ride,” Oliver said of picking up the ride on Mutual Regard.

“Obviously he’s a good stayer; the Ebor is traditionally a good form-guide for the Melbourne Cup, and without a stand-out Melbourne Cup horse this year I think he’s got a good chance.

Van Percy ran well in the Herbert Power, he ran second to him in the Ebor, so that’s a good form line.

“He’s in good form, Johnny is a good trainer; he’s been down here and experienced the Cup, so he knows what type of horse is needed.

“So I don’t think he would have brought him all this way if he didn’t think he had a real chance.”

Finishing outside the places just once in an impressive seven race 2013 preparation, Mutual Regard finished second in the Scotland Nation Of Enterprise Handicap (2816m) first-up in June and continued to build in form and class on his way to second amongst classy company in the Conditions Stakes (3617m) in early October.

Having won a minor over 3218m first-up this year and finished third in the Listed Challenge Stakes (2816m) prior to the Ebor, Mutual Regard is currently available at generous odds of $19 for success in the Melbourne Cup with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
