A notable performer over an Australian racing tenure over the spring of 2012 and autumn of 2013, Gatewood charged home to win the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) most notably; progressing to mid-pack finishes in both the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

Having returned to racing in career-best form this year, Gosden told Racing Victoria he was thrilled with the Galileo entire’s performance on heavy going in the Group 2 Grand Prix De Deauville (2500m) last time out on August 31st, believing the French event to be a great form indicator.

“The horse is in good form and I am looking forward to taking him back to Australia,” Gosden said.

“He got stuck in the mud on his most recent start in Deauville but still ran a very good race in defeat, and he had won nicely at the same track on his previous outing. The ground had been soft that day too – as it had been all the way through the Deauville meeting, but it was bog like on his last start.

“The horse certainly knows how to get to Australia and back and the plan is to run him straight off the plane in the Cup – he will not have a prep race.

“I have been pleased with the way he has been training this year. He breezed well the other morning and he will head off into quarantine next week.

“Like most horses, what he wants is good ground. He just doesn’t want extremes of going.”

Securing an commendable record of eight wins and ten minor places from just 26 competitive starts so far, Gatewood is currently available at generous odds of $51 for success in the 2014 Melbourne Cup, sharing the eighth line of betting with the likes of 2012 champion Green Moon and Gris Caro with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
