Japanese Sensation Bande confirmed for 2014 Melbourne Cup Tilt

August 12th, 2014

A standout performer over just four competitive race starts so far, connections of exciting Japanese stayer Bande have confirmed a tilt at the 2014 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November is on the cards.

Charging home to win the Listed Sapporo Nikkei Open (2600m) by more than five lengths last weekend, Bande was included in nominations for the 2014 Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) when the list of 225 potential candidates was released last Tuesday, however is yet to be confirmed for a lead-up path.

Also outlining a possible tilt at the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) on October 22nd, International Recruitment Officer Leigh Jordan said Racing Victoria is understandably thrilled with confirmation Bande will travel to Australia during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, and is expecting an impressive horse on the back of last weekend’s win.

“Keita Tanaka, who is the Racing Manager for Yoshito Yahagi, confirmed to me today that Bande is coming to Melbourne for the Spring Racing Carnival,” Jordon told Racing Victoria News.

“The Melbourne Cup will be the primary target for Bande and at this stage both the Caulfield Cup and Geelong Cup remain on the table as potential lead-up runs.

“The horse couldn’t have been more impressive winning at Sapporo on the weekend and his form in Stakes races behind the likes of Epiphaneia and Gold Ship is strong.

“We’ve seen how Japanese-trained horses have performed in Melbourne previously so the prospect of a return in 2014 is extremely exciting.”

Securing an impressive total of five wins over just 12 competitive race starts so far, Bande finished third in this year’s edition of the Group 2 Hanshin Daishotin (3000m); an event in which fellow Japanese stayer Delta Blues also placed third in the lead-up to victory in the 2006 Melbourne Cup.
