Godolphin Pair Likely to Target 2014 Melbourne Cup

August 1st, 2014

Charging home to finish first and second in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup (3219m) overnight, Godolphin trainer Saeed Bin Suroor has confirmed he will target the major Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) with classy pair Cavalryman and Ahzeemah this November.

No stranger to the Melbourne way of going, Cavalryman travelled down under to contest the 2012 edition of the Race that Stops a Nation following an impressive European preparation, but could only a manage a mid-pack finish.

Settling in prime position on the heels of early leader, Her Majesty The Queen-owned Estimate, Cavalryman found a clear running line upon reaching the final straight, comfortably spooling up to finish well and truly in the clear of his stable mate; Michael Owen’s Brown Panther running on for third.

Yet to break through for a Melbourne Cup victory despite sending runners close to every year since the turn of the century, Bin Suroor told Racing Post he is confident the two miles of Australia’s feature race will play directly into the strengths of a more matured Cavalryman this season.

“He can go for the Lonsdale Cup now and then we’ll talk to Sheikh Mohammed about going to the Melbourne Cup,” Bin Suroor said.

“He is a very easy horse to train; I think a mile and six or two miles are the best trips for him.”

Running on to claim his second consecutive runners-up tag in the Goodwood Cup, Bin Suroor said Ahzeemah is also in line for a trip to Australia, outlining plans for a three-pronged attack on the Melbourne Cup.

“Ahzeemah could also go for the Melbourne Cup. I would like to take three,” Bin Suroor added.

Securing an impressive total of 10 wins and as many minor places from just 37 competitive starts so far, Cavalryman has returned to racing in particularly impressive form in 2014; winning the Nad Al Sheba Trophy (2810m) in Meydan first-up before running on for second in the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup (3200m) on March 29th and winning the Group 2 Princess Of Wales Stakes (2414m) prior to the Goodwood Cup.
