Van Percy Confirmed for 2014 Melbourne Cup Campaign

July 30th, 2014

While yet to be confirmed for the 2014 edition of the Race that Stops a Nation, talented British stayer Van Percy took a huge step towards the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) with victory in the Summer Handicap (2816m) at Goodwood overnight.

Jumping from the gates well, Van Percy found ideal position on the heels of the early leaders during the 2014 Summer Handicap before comfortably spooling up and breaking clear of the pack over the final 300m to win by half a length.

Confirming a trip to Australia for the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival will definitely come to fruition, trainer Andrew Balding told Racing Victoria Van Percy is likely to make several appearances on course before hopefully taking his place at Flemington on the first Tuesday of November.

“He’s tough, not very big, but all heart. That was really well done by David from that draw,” Balding said of Van Percy’s Summer Handicap performance.

“With a penalty he’s now likely to get into the Ebor and that’s an obvious target. It’s within the quarantine timings so it works out really well.”

OTI bought a major share in him with that in mind. Whatever happens, as long as he’s healthy, he’ll go down to Australia in the first quarantine group.

“He’s going to have to go up another 10lb or so to even get into the Melbourne Cup.

“He’s likely to have another couple of runs for me in Australia, maybe in something like the Geelong Cup first, and then I think he’ll probably stay down there. There’s also the Caulfield Cup to think about.”

Securing an impressive total of five race wins and five minor places from just 17 competitive starts so far, Van Percy has undoubtedly hit career-best form over his current five race preparation; winning the Coral Mobile Handicap (2414m) first-up and continuing to build in form and class on his way to victory in the Triconnex Handicap (2816m) prior to his Summer Handicap triumph.

Leading online bookie is currently offering the best early odds on the 2014 Melbourne Cup, for which Van Percy is available at a generous quote of $34 for success on November 4th.
