July 24th, 2014

Initially confirmed for a return to Australia during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival for a second attempt on the featured Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), trainer Willie Mullins has revealed Simenon is now in serious doubt of making the trip after the talented globetrotter sustained a stress fracture above his off-fore knee.

Arriving in Victoria following a standout season in his native Britain and Ireland in 2013, Simenon found ideal position within the pack during the 2013 edition of the Melbourne Cup; following eventual champion Fiorente in the final straight to finish a fighting fourth.

Having taken out the Grade 3 Grimes Hurdle (3218m) at Ireland’s Tipperary course on July 12th, Mullins said the Marju gelding was struggling to recover in the days proceeding, with scans revealing the unfortunate injury.

“He was a little stiff for a few days and he didn’t come right,” Mullins said.

“I thought it was maybe the firm ground at the time but it turns out he has a stress fracture above his right knee and will have six weeks off.”

Securing an impressive total of seven race wins and ten minor places over both flat and jumps events during a strong racing career to date, Simenon was unlucky to finish second in both the Group 1 Gold Cup (4023m) and Group 2 Lonsdale Cup (3299m) in the month preceding the 2013 Melbourne Cup, and was unable to handle the late pace when 13th in the Group 1 Japan Cup (2413m) just two weeks later.

Steadily building to the task over five starts during his current preparation, Simenon finishing fifth in this year’s edition of the Gold Cup and appeared in line for a successful trip to Victoria once more.

While unlikely to take his position in the Race that Stops a Nation on November 4th, Simenon is currently offered at a quote of $26 for success; a final decision of his inclusion to be made at the conclusion of six weeks in the paddock. is currently offering the best early odds on all major races through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, including the Melbourne Cup!
