A star-studded field of 24 horses will tackle the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday and the race is set to be one of the most exciting in the history of Australia’s most famous race.

Fiorente and Mount Athos have been battling for favoritism in 2013 Melbourne Cup betting markets throughout the week but the Gai Waterhouse-trained stayer is the new favourite after drawing barrier five this afternoon.

His major rival in betting, Mount Athos did not fare as well in the barrier draw and will need plenty of luck to win the Melbourne Cup from gate 22 but will have the advantage of leading Australian jockey Craig Williams on his back.

Lloyd Williams will have a record-breaking six runners in the 2013 Melbourne Cup and the majority of his charges fared extremely well in the barrier draw this afternoon.

The highly-rated Sea Moon (barrier seven), Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner (barrier eight), last-start winner Seville (barrier nine) and 2012 Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon (barrier ten) will all start next to each other, with Masked Marvel (barrier two) tucked on the inside of the field.

Sydney Cup winner Mourayan (barrier 19) was the only Lloyd Williams-owned runner not to fare well at the barrier draw and is the extreme outsider in 2013 Melbourne Cup betting markets at the massive odds at $151.

While the Macedon Lodge team had a mortgage on a number of the inside gates, a number of European-trained runners will also start towards the inside of the field; with 2011 Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden drawing barrier one, French stayer Verema starting from barrier three and the Michael Owen-owned Brown Panther set to jump from barrier six.

Horses have won the Melbourne Cup from an outside barrier but a wide draw is never ideal and a number of the leading chances have lengthened slightly because of their poor draw.

Irish St Leger winner Voleuse De Coeurs has been well-backed in the week leading up to the race but will need a great deal of luck from barrier 21, as will Gai Waterhouse-trained import Tres Blue (barrier 22) who will be the first Northern Hemisphere-trained three-year-old to contest the ‘race that stops a nation’ since Mahler in 2007.

OTI Racing only made the decision to include Ruscello in the 2013 Melbourne Cup field after his victory in the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) but may be regretting their decision after the lightly-raced galloper drew the far outside gate.

2013 Melbourne Cup runners whose chances were not affected either way by the barrier draw include: Ethiopia (barrier 14), Super Cool (barrier 13), Royal Empire (barrier 11) and Simenon (barrier 12).
