2013 Melbourne Cup Second Acceptances Released

October 28th, 2013

Second acceptances have been released for the 2013 Melbourne Cup (3200m) that will be run as race seven at Flemington Racecourse on Tuesday November 5.

Mount Athos is now on the second line of 2013 Melbourne Cup betting after second acceptances were taken by Racing Victoria this morning.

47 horses remain in contention to take part in the Melbourne Cup and a number of stayers will have their last opportunity to earn a start in the final field when they contest the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) or Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday.

A number of high-profile withdrawals have opened a few spaces in the Melbourne Cup final field; with It’s A Dundeel, Puissance De Lune and Royal Descent all withdrawn from the race and not included in the second acceptances.

While Puissance De Lune and It’s A Dundeel had their Melbourne Cup hopes ended up poor showings in the Cox Plate, the chances of Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente have only improved and the son of Monsun is now a clear favourite in the Melbourne Cup betting market at odds of $5.50.

The 2013 Melbourne Cup is once again expected to have an international flavour eight stayers who arrived in Australia just over a week ago are set to join Dandino and Simenon, who have both already run in Australia this year, in the Melbourne Cup field.

Some of the well-backed European-trained runners in the Melbourne Cup include:

  • Mount Athos ($9) – The Luca Cumani-trained stayer was the hard luck story of last year’s race and has been well backed to improve on his fifth place finish behind Green Moon.
  • Verema ($12) – The Alain De Royer-Dupre-trained stayer won the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m), the same race won by Americain before his 2010 Melbourne Cup win, and has been one of the best-backed runners in the last 24 hours.
  • Voleuse De Coeurs ($13) – The Irish St Leger winner is now prepared by Michael Moroney and has impressed with his trackwork at the International Equine Centre in Werribee.
  • Tres Blue ($19) – Lightly-raced stayer who will be the first Northern Hemisphere three-year-old to contest the Melbourne Cup since Mahler who finished seventh behind Efficient in the 2007 edition of the race.
  • Brown Panther ($21) – The Shirocco entire had an injury scare in the lead-up to the Melbourne Cup but has good form over 3200 metres.
  • Red Cadeaux ($41) – The 2011 runner-up could be the value selection as he has raced consistently all around the world and has a great deal of experience in the Melbourne Cup.
  • Dunaden ($51) – The Prix De l’Arc de Triomphe was the original target for the 2011 Melbourne Cup winner but he was not up to the mark and has been brought to Australia for his third straight tilt at ‘the race that stops a nation.’

The final field for the 2013 Melbourne Cup will be confirmed on Saturday afternoon and will be followed by the barrier draw.
